On Tuesday, we had a special guest visitor here at Learning Garden Childcare – Firefighter Mike! Mike visited all three rooms and said hello to the children. He showed them his uniform and put on the boots and pants, jacket, hat, balaclava, face mask and gloves. He passed around his hat so the children could feel how heavy it is. Some of the children tried to lift the hat above their heads. Mike also talked about fire safety, when we call 911, and the different duties that firefighters do.

The children had a fantastic time meeting Mike, especially because they were exploring the topic of Community Helpers last week during their learning circles. The Juniors gave Mike lots of hugs before he left, and showed him the firefighter costumes they have in their classroom. The Toddlers were able to imitate the wee-ooo-wee-ooo sound of a siren. They also waved goodbye to Mike and said “Bye, Bye!” The Seniors had a lot of great questions like “What do you do when there are no fires?” and “What do you do when the building is too high for the ladders?” Mike answered all of their questions (wash the trucks, eat, train, sleep and they use special elevators or stairs). The Seniors surprised him with 3 special songs they had prepared for him, and gave him a special handmade thank you card complete with a drawing of a fire truck. Before he left, Mike gave each child at the Centre a special gift bag with stickers, activity sheets, and other goodies.

Thanks Firefighter Mike for visiting Learning Garden Childcare!
